Registering a luxury car in Nevada costs more than you expect

Nevada taxes cars every year on their original sticker price, not what you paid. For an exotic, that is a real number. Here is how it works.

The short answer

  • The yearly tax is based on 35% of the original MSRP, reduced as the car ages. What you paid doesn’t matter.
  • In Clark County the rate works out to 5 cents per dollar of that value.
  • Buying used from a private party means no sales tax, which can save thousands on a luxury car.

01

How the tax is figured

1
Start with MSRP
The original manufacturer’s price, without options.
2
Take 35%
That is the DMV value.
3
Apply the age table
100% new, 95% at one year, then down 10 points a year to a floor of 15%.
4
Multiply by 5%
4% state Governmental Services Tax plus Clark County’s 1% supplemental.

02

What it comes to

Car DMV value Yearly tax
New, $250,000 MSRP $87,500 $4,375
3 years old, $250,000 MSRP $65,625 $3,281
New, $500,000 MSRP $175,000 $8,750

Add the $33 registration fee each year, and a title fee the first time. Motorcycles follow the same formula.

03

The benefit most buyers miss

In Nevada, a used car bought from a private party, not a dealer, isn’t subject to sales tax. You still pay the yearly registration tax, but the one-time sales tax goes away.

Used car price Clark County sales tax at a dealer (8.375%) From a private party
$150,000 $12,563 $0
$250,000 $20,938 $0
$400,000 $33,500 $0

On a collector car, buying from a private seller instead of a dealer can save more than a year of registration.

Gifts and sales between family members are also exempt. Have the title, bill of sale and inspection in order, since a private sale comes without a dealer’s paperwork.

04

Moving your cars here

Register within 30 days of becoming a Nevada resident.
Get Nevada insurance first. Out-of-state policies aren’t accepted.
Do the VIN inspection before your DMV appointment.
Check whether you need an emissions test. New cars are exempt for their first three registrations, and electric cars always are.
Bring proof of sales tax paid. Nevada credits tax paid to another state, and you may owe the difference.

05

Questions buyers ask

How is car registration calculated in Nevada?

On 35% of the original MSRP, reduced by age, times 4 cents per dollar statewide plus 1 cent in Clark County.

What does it cost to register a $250,000 car in Las Vegas?

About $4,375 a year in tax when new, plus the $33 registration fee.

How long do new residents have to register?

30 days.

Do you pay sales tax on a private-party car sale in Nevada?

No. Used cars bought from a private party aren’t subject to Nevada sales tax. You still pay registration and the yearly Governmental Services Tax.
