The short answer
- The average July high is 104.5°F and the average low is 82°F. The valley averages about 78 days a year at 100°F or more.
- Everything here is built recently, so everything is air-conditioned. Summer is a run from one cool place to the next.
- Outdoor plans happen at sunrise or after sunset, and July is when many locals travel.
01
How hot does it get?
Monsoon season runs from June 15 to September 30. In some summers it brings humidity and afternoon thunderstorms in July and August. In others it barely shows up.
02
How do people live with it?
Most of Las Vegas was built recently, so homes, stores, restaurants and garages are air-conditioned. We spend most of the summer going from one air-conditioned spot to another.
If you want to get something done outside, you do it early. Sunrise in July is around 5:30 a.m., and that is when the trails, tee times and dog walks happen. The other window opens after the sun goes down.
03
Our winter is July
Summer is a popular time to travel to other parts of the country and the world to escape the heat. Locals call it the Vegas winter in July: the season you stay inside or leave town, the way people in colder places do in January.
The trade is simple. You give up July, and you get October through May.
